About the artist

Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter Laufey studied cello and piano before training at Berklee College of Music. She brings jazz standards, classical musicianship and contemporary pop into songs that foreground romantic uncertainty and everyday vulnerability. Rather than presenting jazz as a museum style, she uses its harmonic colours and vocal phrasing in concise, accessible songwriting. Online performances helped her find young listeners, while albums such as Bewitched built a larger audience without abandoning the intimate, old-fashioned atmosphere at the centre of her sound.

A modern jazz audience takes shape

Laufey’s early online performances and self-released songs established a dedicated following before her wider breakthrough. The 2023 single From the Start, a playful bossa-nova-inflected song, helped carry Bewitched to the top of Billboard’s jazz charts and brought her sound into mainstream pop conversation. This later surge grew from the audience she had cultivated during the pandemic, rather than appearing out of nowhere. Her success reframed jazz-pop as emotionally immediate for a new generation.

Songs to know

From the Start

A lightly dancing bossa nova rhythm sets up a confession of affection that hasn’t been reciprocated. Laufey’s precise phrasing keeps embarrassment, wit and longing in balance: the music sounds easy, while the emotional situation is anything but.

Street by Street

An early introduction to Laufey’s warm voice and jazz-inflected phrasing. The song gives romantic disappointment a buoyant setting, with self-possession arriving through melody rather than a grand declaration.

Valentine

Unexpected love unsettles someone more used to observing romance from a distance. The gentle arrangement holds delight and disbelief together, keeping tenderness from turning into overstatement.

From your headphones to the stage

There’s a moment at a gig when a familiar song stops feeling like something you listen to alone. The opening notes land, the room recognises them, and suddenly hundreds of people are sharing the same feeling. That’s the appeal of seeing Laufey: a connection with the music that a recording can start, but a live performance can make entirely different. A quiet verse can draw a room closer; a chorus can send it in the opposite direction. The dates above are the next opportunities listed here to be part of it.

Favourites, deep cuts and new discoveries

The songs you know are one reason to go. The songs that surprise you are another. An album track can sound different with a live band; a familiar melody might reveal a detail you’ve missed through headphones. The tracks featured here offer a way into the artist’s catalogue, rather than a promised setlist. Each tour has its own choices, and the artist’s announcements are the place to find confirmed show details. There’s room for both the song you’ve been waiting for and the one that becomes a favourite on the way home.

Let one artist lead to another

A favourite performer can open the door to a whole new corner of music. A shared genre might bring together artists with very different voices, influences and stories. The related names above are worth a listen if you’re curious about where to go next; the genre and location pages offer another route to a night out.
